To become a practice nurse, formal nursing education and academic training is naturally necessary. On top of that, practice nurses should be duly registered nurses. Aside from knowledge and skills, a practice nurse should also be equipped with the right mix of traits needed for the job. In larger GP surgeries you may work alongside other practice nurses and have the opportunity to specialise in the needs of a particular client group.

What qualifications and experience will employers look for?
To work as a general practice nurse you need:

to be a registered nurse, usually within the child or adult branch
up to two years' post-qualifying experience.
Some employers will also prefer you to have completed a community specialist practitioner programme, specialising in general practice nursing (see Training section for details).

To become a nurse you need to complete a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) approved degree or Diploma of Higher Education in Nursing. To get onto an approved course you need to meet some general requirements (set by the NMC), which include:

providing evidence of your literacy and numeracy, good health and good character, and recent successful study experience
meeting the minimum age requirement for nurse training – 17.5 years old in England
agreeing to have a Criminal Records Bureau check (a criminal conviction does not automatically exclude you from working within the NHS).
Course providers can set their own academic entry requirements, which can include:

nursing diploma – five GCSEs (A-C) preferably in English, maths and/or a science-based subject
nursing degree – five GCSEs (A-C) plus two or three A levels, possibly including a biological science.
If you do not meet the course entry requirements listed please check with universities because alternatives, such as an Access to Higher Education course, may be accepted.
